Using Wavenet

WaveNet is a tool that allows students the freedom to become their own academic advisors. The resource is available to all students, using the same login information as one would use to check their University email. WaveNet allows a student to register for classes, check their grades, get course syllabi, determine their progress towards obtaining a degree, check the status of financial aid and tuition due, drop a class, check email, log on to the academic resources (library, blackboard, and Sakai), get news updates from around the university, and so much more.

Checking Email

Once the University has issued a username and password, one may check their email by going to the site https://wavenet.pepperdine.edu/. The username must be entered in all caps, followed by the password issued or chosen. This will direct you to your University homepage. On the top right corner, there is an email tab. This tab takes you to your email inbox. Useful tip alert: when composing an email, once you have opened a new message, you can click on the “To:” word and a destination lookup window will appear. This will allow you to look up the email addresses of people in the University by their name, position, or partial name.

Student Services

Student services is the feature that will allow students to perform nearly all administrative tasks associated with their education. To access student services, there is a tab at the top right corner of your homepage or also one in the middle of the homepage under “Academic Tools.” The student services tab will allow you to add or drop classes, check your tuition, check your schedule, check your grades, and much more.

Sakai

This program will be used as an online reference database between the teachers and their students in the class. It will be used for turning in assignments, access to reference material and grades.

Registering for Classes

Under the student services tab, a few key steps must be taken before one can register for their own classes.

Step 1

The first important step is to check when your registration appointment is. This is done under the “Enrollment Dates” tab. This will tell a student when one can actually register for classes. Please note that although you may not enroll until a certain time, steps should be done prior to this time to ensure that one is best prepared to get their classes when their registration appointment occurs.

Step 2

Check your degree audit report under the student services tab. Click on the “Degree Audit” option in the middle of the page. In the blue box go ahead and make sure the options read “Pepperdine University” and “Advisement Transcript.” The click “Go.” This will bring you to an unofficial transcript that shows you the classes you need to take to complete your registered degree and also the classes you have completed (with their grades). Most core classes need to be taken before one can really explore the electives offered. The Degree Audit Report (DAR) will directly list out your options for classes you need to meet your requirements for graduation. Print this screen out for reference.

Step 3

Under the student service tab, make sure there are no registration holds on your account that will prevent you from adding your classes at the given time. The “Hold” tab on the right side of the screen will show you if you will have trouble registering. If nothing is there, you are good to go. Now it is time to search for that class schedule that suits your academic and personal needs and desires. This process can be long but certainly has the potential reward of “the perfect schedule.” Before you start searching for exact class matches, you must determine what classes will fit best into your schedule. Typically a business school class is a four-hour block, taught once a week. They are offered starting times of 8 am, 1 pm, or 6 pm (Monday through Thursday). It is certainly possible for a student to cram all of their classes onto two days of the week, but that will lead to very busy days.

Alright, now that you have your DAR and an idea of what time of the week you want your classes to fall on, click on the “Student Services” tab. In the upper right hand corner, there is an option “Search for Classes.” Click this. You will be directed to a screen that will allow you to search, add, and drop classes. Start of by making sure your options read the right term and school for which you are intending to register. With your DAR, you are able to search for these required courses you need for completion of your degree.

Useful tip alert

You can use what is called a “Wish List” to add all of your classes to a preparation folder before your enrollment period. Say for example you want to take Marketing 605, section 14. You can “Select” this class and then push next. This will be added to your wish list. The wish list enables you to save all these searches so when your enrollment appointment is open, you do not need to start this process over from scratch.

Once you have your classes in the “Wish List” all you need to do is wait for your appointment. Once your appointment has begun, go to the student services tab and click on the “Wish List” tab. Your classes should be right there. All you need to do is select them and add the classes. Warning: have a back-up plan, for many of the classes can fill up before you get a chance to enroll.

Obtaining Course Syllabi

Now that you have enrolled for your classes, you have the opportunity to obtain the course syllabus for a class before it has started. This will allow you to see the required textbooks (in case you want to buy them online far cheaper than the bookstore) and even get a head start on your reading. Go to the “Academic Resources” tab on the left column of the screen. Somewhere in the directed page, there will be a “Course Syllabi” option that will allow you to search by class for pre-posted syllabi. Note that not all teachers are timely on posting the syllabi ahead of time, but for a majority of the classes, this is a useful tool.

Checking Tuition

Under the Student Services tab, there is a “Finance” tab that will give a breakdown of Financial Aid and tuition due.

As you can see, WaveNet is the Walmart of online resources. Anything you want or need to do is done through WaveNet. I encourage everyone to take the time working through the several options on WaveNet and explore the potential with the site. I have attempted to give you a run-down of the more important basics of the tool. If you have any questions feel free to contact the IT Help Desk at (310) 506-HELP. Please note that Safari is not completely compatible with the WaveNet software. I would recommend using a different browser.
